Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position as White House adviser for strategic communications. The White House's advisor to strategic communications Mercedes Schlapp has faced a myriad of issues. This includes a president who also has the director of his own communications and multiple legal disputes that could disrupt the messaging strategy. Schlapp kept her focus throughout the process, collaborating closely with the White House's committees for political and legislative affairs, policy shops, and larger communications teams to oversee the implementation of policy. In the beginning, she has focused on school safety problems, addiction, infrastructure and international trade. As a current employee, Schlapp is not in contact with many reporters. In March, she received a flurry of interest when it was it was announced that she would be a potential candidate to replace Hope Hicks as director of communication. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a good position as White House strategist communications advisor. She must contend with a president who serves as his own communication director, multiple legal battles which could disrupt the strategy of communication for the administration and a number of Cabinet secretaries who are caught in controversies of their own. Schlapp has managed to stay focused and on task, working with White House teams in political matters, legislative affairs and policy, as well as the communications department in general. So far, Schlapp has focused on school safety problems, addiction issues infrastructure, trade, and addiction. At the moment, Schlapp does not deal too much with journalists. It was in March that she received a flurry of attention, when it became known that Schlapp would be a potential candidate to replace Hope Hicks's job as director of communication. It hasn't been an easy fight. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as an opponent who is also named Tony have been fighting during the media coverage. Schlapp confronted Sayegh following The Washington Examiner printed a bad story on his character.
